Avoiding Freud

This painting was featured in the “Buried Alive” art show at the Cactus Gallery.

In the 1930s when the authorities labeled homosexuality as a mental illness and a vice, Freud was telling folks it wasn’t and he signed a public statement to repeal the law that criminalized it. Freud said the law was “an injustice” and “a cruelty”, and he furthermore noted that gay people are often distinguished by especially high intellectual development and ethical culture.
